Which Social Media Channel Should I Use for My Business?

Which Social Media Channel Should I Use for My Business?

As a social media manager, I get asked this question all the time.

The answer is, it depends.  Can you use all of them?  Sure, if you have the time.  But you really need to focus on 1-2 and do a GOOD job.  Really dedicate your time to that 1 or 2.  And some channels are more appropriate or advantageous than others.

For example, the beauty and fashion industry is an Instagram MUST!  Post beautiful pictures of your products and share them with your following.  Use hashtags from the industry and your following will grow accordingly.

Would a personal injury lawyer be a good candidate for Instagram?  Probably not.  Pictures of injuries is probably not a great use of social media.  But Facebook and Youtube would be perfect!

So, what industries should Instagram be used for?

1.  beauty

2.  fashion

3.  artists

4.  jewelry designers

5.  photographers

6.  restaurants

7.  realtors

What industries are best for Facebook?

1.  Most--especially if you want to run Facebook ad campaigns.  You must have a Facebook page.

2.  realtors

3.  restaurants

4.  service industry-plumbers, electricians, roofers, dentists, doctors, lawyers, chiropractors, etc.

How about YouTube?

1.  YouTube is great for showcasing actors, comedians, musicians, singers, etc.

2.  realtors

3.  teachers/instructors

4.  anyone that has a skill like a plumber, electrician, roofer, etc.  as a tool to educate

I honestly don't recommend Twitter to my clients much anymore.  It is a great way to grow a BIG following QUICKLY.  But in terms of long term growth and sustainability, I don't see much ROI in it.

Now, that's not to say that some aren't KILLING it on Twitter, because they are.  But it takes a lot of time and effort and like I said, the returns aren't that substantial.

To recap, pick one or two channels that are appropriate for your business, and work HARD to build a following and engagement; a COMMUNITY.
